How to Spot Termite Damage in Arizona Homes

Termites are a necessary part of nature, helping to break down dead and rotting wood. But what if they happen to think your home looks like it should be on the menu? Since you’re highly invested in the condition of your home, you know that preventing termite infestations with Wagner Pest Solutions is essential to maintaining your home’s value. Here’s some information for you to keep in mind if you start noticing signs of termite activity.

Termite facts

The United States is home to nearly 4,000 different species of termites, but only about 10 percent of them cause damage to homes and commercial structures. In Arizona, there are only four types of termites that are destructive to homes: arid-land subterranean termites, desert dampwood termites, desert subterranean termites, and western drywood termites. Of these, the desert subterranean termite is the most common and most destructive. Subterranean termites live in underground colonies, each of which can contain over 300,000 insects.

Signs of termite damage

In your home, termites will consume wood, wallpaper, and fabrics that contain cellulose, which is the main component making up the cell walls of plants. Some signs of termite damage may be hidden within the walls of your home, since termites often burrow into timber and eat it from the inside out. Call Wagner Pest Solutions if you notice any of the following:

  • Hollow or crumbling wood
  • Honeycombed appearance on timber or drywall
  • Mazes on interior walls
  • Mud tubes on exterior walls, or on objects leading to your home
  • Piles of termite feces
  • Swarms of termites or piles of translucent wings discarded by swarmers
  • Warping or cracking on painted wood surfaces
