3 Types of Scorpions Found in Arizona

Scorpions are found throughout Arizona and are a common pest concern for everyone. While there are nearly 56 species native to the state, most residents and business owners only deal with a few different ones. 1. Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion

This species earns its name for being one of the largest and most intimidating scorpions in the United States. Usually olive green or tan in color, this arachnid can grow to be seven inches long. While surprising to find, most homeowners compare its sting to that of a bee sting. Additionally, these scorpions generally feast on small birds and lizards. 

2. Arizona Bark Scorpion

The Arizona bark scorpion is one of the most venemous species native to the state. A single sting from this small, yellow arachnid can cause numbness, swelling, redness, muscle spasms, foaming at the mouth, and in some cases, death. The body of the Arizona bark is slim and dainty, and thus difficult to spot in the brush and around landscaping. Unlike others, this type of scorpion is generally found in groups.  

3. Devil’s Scorpion

Devil’s scorpion, or striped-tailed scorpion, is the most prevalent species in Arizona. In fact, this small arachnid can be found throughout the southwestern United States. Generally living under rocks or woodpiles, this species grows to about two inches long and is a little wider than the bark scorpion. The thin brown line that runs down the back is the distinguishing mark for this scorpion, and their sting causes minimal discomfort.
