1. Know What to Look For

One of the most unnerving things about bed bugs is that you often don’t know they are present until after they’ve made themselves known by their bites and the evidence of those bites. So, take a moment and learn about what bed bugs look like and what a surface looks like if bed bugs are present. 

2. Know Where to Look For Them

One of the more common places that you might encounter bed bugs is in hotel rooms. Bed bugs gravitate towards places that are warm and dark, and where they have the easiest access to people. The headboard area of a bed and mattress are the most important places to check in a hotel room. 

3. Know What to Do

If you see small brownish or reddish specks in the seams or around the headboard in your hotel room, alert the hotel staff and ask for a new room several rooms away – or on another floor entirely. If your new room checks out OK, you may still want to take a few precautions:

• Keep your luggage on a hard surface, not the carpet floor.
• When you get home, check your luggage carefully before you bring it inside. A lint roller is a great tool for this.
• As an extra safety measure, run all your clothes and dryer-safe items through a hot dryer cycle to kill anything that might have hitched along.
