Why Mosquitoes Love the Rain

It’s that time of year again – the mosquitoes are out in full force! Naturally, this can be a huge annoyance, especially when you’re trying to enjoy a nice summer evening outside. But did you know that there is a scientific reason why mosquitoes love the rain? Let Wagner Pest Solutions provide you with the reasons behind why these pesky insects seem to come out in full force when it rains.

Mosquitoes Lay Their Eggs in Water

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and rain can provide the perfect environment for them. Unfortunately, this water can pool in your gutters, bird baths, truck beds, tires, and low-lying areas on your lawn. So, it’s always important to check these areas before and after a storm and drain the water if at all possible. Doing so will prevent mosquitoes from laying their eggs on your lawn.

They Can’t Fly, So They Hide

So, this may not be a reason mosquitoes love the rain, but it certainly explains why you see swarms of them following a rain storm. Since they can’t fly well during the rain, they’ll look for hiding places. Once it clears off, they all emerge simultaneously, swarming your backyard and looking for their next meal.

People Become More Attractive

Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, which is what humans exhale. So, even though the rain has cleared, the extra moisture in the air can carry your breath further and attract these biters. Additionally, summer rains bring more heat, so you’re likely to sweat more. Even just stepping outside for a few moments following a rain storm can subject you to the Arizona heat, cause you to sweat, and thus attract these pesky biters.
